We often think of protective styles for our hair during the winter time but I think using protective hairstyles during the summer are just as important. During the summer we tend to participate in more activities and be more physically active. Whether you’re just facing the everyday heat and humidity of the outdoors or joining in on all the summer fun, from pool days and picnics to biking and walking; protective styles can be very beneficial to maintaining your hair. Below are some of the protective hairstyles that I believe are the best for hot summer months.

Cornrows

Cornrows are a perfect summer hairstyle because they are low maintenance, they last and are versatile. You can add accessories, wear them in a bun or a ponytail and they allow you to easily reach your scalp and hair to maintain moisture.

Bantu Knots

Bantu Knots are a great option for a protective style. They allow you to keep your ends tucked away from the elements and hair out of your face while it is hot outside. The hairstyle is also great because once you are tired of wearing you will be able to take them down and wear the bantu knot out as a second style.

Knotless Box Braids

Knotless box braids offer a lower tension alternative to the typical box braid while still allowing you to have a low maintenance protective style. Knotless braids are extremely versatile, between style ideas that you come up with yourself and the endless amount of tutorials you can find on youtube it is almost impossible to run out of style ideas.

Two Strand Twists

Two strand twists work well in the summer time because they are a quicker style and can even be combined with flat twists or cornrows to create half up, half down styles. This style also maintains moisture well and is easy to moisturize by spritzing your twists.
